We are evolving a data fabric architecture and need easy access, control and audit over the data. Is data virtualization the answer?
It’s not the data gathering or data storage that is the problem anymore – it’s about making the data accessible to those people and systems in the business that need it – quickly and easily. Investment management firms like so many other firms have adopted a combination of cloud and hybrid storage capabilities as the most cost effective, scalable and flexible IT infrastructure and many incoming data feeds natively leverage these cloud based technologies.
Curium is ideally suited to providing controlled access to such data fabric architectures using its data virtualization layer. Within this meta data access layer, the user simply configures a logical data model of the required data sets residing in the hybrid cloud and rather than physically moving the data using traditional ETL processes, the self-service user/citizen developer has instant access to the source data using an OData API available from their ‘developer/data analytics’ tool of choice – for example, Excel, PowerBI etc. – In summary, quick and easy access to the source data, available for consumption as soon as that data arrives in the appropriate cloud location.

But Curium goes further than that. The very nature of investment management means that the data, while easily available from a technical standpoint, will typically require some level of validation and control to ensure that the data is of sufficient quality to perform the levels of reporting and analysis required. Using CuriumDQM the data can be screened and quality checked to ensure that only curated data is presented to the end user/developer. As a comprehensive business application, CuriumDQM gives the Operations/data team configurable workflow options to manage, investigate and resolve any data exceptions when found. Raw data that doesn’t meet the criteria set out in the curation process can either be provided with a suitable warning or even withheld from the end user depending on the nature of the data and/or quality threshold required.
As a comprehensive data management solution, there is always the option to process and move the source data further using Curium’s ETL and EDM components but with Curium Data Virtualisation components a quick, simple and unified view of any/all data source(s) is readily available.
